Jassi jaisa koi Nahin
Jassie aunty was a larger than life figure for me... not just any family friend, I shared a very special relationship with her. She always made an effort to carry my favourite snacks and fresh fruits from her garden whenever she visited us. She would hide them and only when I "got upset", she would give them to me.
We would talk for hours, argue, laugh together... I would tease her mercilessly and she would constantly remind me to treat her with more respect 😀😀.
Truly Jassie aunty, there wont be anyone like you in my life.
As a young bride looking to make my place in this new world,
I recall that smile which welcomed me to her inner circle;
The hug that said implicitly that I’m there for you.
It meant the world to me, more that words could ever do.
The years went past, each of us was busy in our own nook,
She marrying her boys while I was raising my young brood.
I met her occasionally; in spite of all hardships, her face
Reflected her inner strength and her amazing grace.
As we got freer, we developed an unusual bond between us.
Up to date with all current events whether social or political.
We discussed and argued all, in good humorous vein
She could give it back like a true Sardarni, with total disdain.
She would share with me her pleasures and disappointments.
Like all old women, she had her long list of complaints.
But she’s the only one I know who could make you laugh aloud
with her as she described her ailments and her pain.
What would you call this relation between us?
Thirty years older, more than a generation apart.
But there was something that tied us…
A feeling which will always keep her in my heart.
As I bid her farewell from the confines of my home,
I know she is not alone on her journey to her new abode.
She carries the love and wishes of all her loved ones with her
I just hope to cherish her blessings like I did when she was here.
